World Population Day observed in various districts

Dimapur, July 11 (EMN): Along with the rest of the world, Nagaland observed World Population Day on the theme ‘Adopt family planning measures and write a new chapter of progress.’

As per reports from various sources, districts including Wokha, Longleng, Mokokchung and Phek observing World Population Day cum launching of World Population Fortnight.

Wokha: World Population Day was observed at CMO Conference Hall, which was attended by a host of administrative officials, civil society leaders, medical staff and health workers, stated a press release issued by CMO office, Wokha.

Chief medical officer Wokha, Dr. Tumchobeni, in her introductory note encouraged the attendees to create awareness and put more effort in family planning activities.

Deputy CMO Wokha, Dr. Zuben Kikon, in his keynote address explained the purpose of observing the day and said depletion of resources necessitated the need to control population.

Dr. Kikon stressed on family planning as a “human right” and urged the health workers to emphasize on gender equality during health talks. A short video clip of family activities carried out in the district was also presented during the programme.

EAC Wokha I. Yentinoungbou, encouraged the attendees to focus on sustainable population and informed the health workers to identify beneficiaries to make the World Population Stabilization Fortnight successful. 

Earlier, Mhonbeni Ezung DPM, chaired the programme and Dr. Thungchanbeni Patton, MO, RBSK, delivered vote of thanks.

Besides the programme officers, representatives from the Likya Eloe Ekhung, Wokha Town Baptist Church, Indian Social Responsibility Network, urban ASHAs and medical staffs attended the programme.

Longleng:  Longleng observed World Population Day cum launching of World Population Fortnight (July 11 to 24) at District Hospital premises with DC Longleng, Dharam Raj as the special guest.

The DC in his address congratulated CMO doctors and staff for initiating such programs and expressed his happiness to have such a gathering, especially women, a DIPR report stated.

Raj said when it comes to family planning and children, women are the one who suffers the most both physically and mentally.

The DC also pointed out how population growth hurts the progress of a nation and states with limited land and resources. He said becomes difficult for the government to provide infrastructure and other facilities to the people when more villages and wards are created and urged the gathering to adopt family planning.

He expressed optimism that by controlling population growth, the country too can have world-class quality infrastructure and health care facilities like other advanced countries where they maintain population growth.

The DC further said that it is “our responsibility and duty to realize the problems faced by the government and contribute towards nation building by adhering to the policies and programmes of the Government.”

Dr. Ademla Tinu, SMO (Obst. & Gynae.) DH Longleng highlighted the importance of family planning and said India was the first country to adopt and launch national protection on family planning in 1952. She said over the years the program has reached every nook and corner of the country including PHCs, sub centers, dispensaries and even urban health centres.

Earlier, CMO Longleng, Dr. Obangjungla, gave the welcome address and DPO (RCH/UIP), Dr. Imnameren Phom, delivered the keynote address.

Mokokchung: In Mokokchung, the launching programme of World Population Fortnight (July 11 to 24) was held at IMDH, Mokokchung, on Monday.

A press release from District Programme Management Unit, NRHM, Mokokchung, informed that during the Fortnight, services like Tubectomy/IUCD insertions would be provided free of cost.

Tubectomy / IUCD would be carried out at District Hospital Mokokchung while IUCD Insertions will be done at the PHCs and CHCs during the Fortnight, the release stated.

Phek: Phek district observed World Population Day at CMO Conference hall, where CMO Phek, Dr. Khriezotuo Paphino, in his keynote address highlighted the importance of adopting family planning and birth spacing.

Gynecologist DH Phek, Dr. Panger, in his speech shared the benefits of small family norms and said that adopting Family Planning decreases maternal and neo-natal mortality rate.

Highlighting on the different methods of Family Planning services, both permanent and temporary, available in the district, Panger informed that eligible couples may adopt suitable methods of choice according to parity.

In commemoration of World Population Day, the district will carry out awareness activities, counselling, distribution of IEC materials, condoms, OCP etc.

Also Family Planning camp will be organised at District Hospital from July 11 to 23 July where lap-ligation and insertion of Copper-T will be done.
