Summer camp for children to learn Karbi folk dance and songs begins

Diphu, July 9 (EMN): A 15-day summer camp – free training cum workshop on Karbi folk dances and songs for children aged between 6 to 12 years – began on July 9 at Rangsina Sarpo cultural hall, Lorulangso in Diphu.

The workshop is being organised by the Cultural Affairs department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in association with Karbi Traditional Music, Culture & Research Institute.

Inaugurating the camp the president of Karbi Cultural Society (KCS), Chandrasing Kro said while lauding the organisers, said that teaching children Karbi folk dances and songs is a contribution towards promotion of Karbi culture among the young minds.

He announced that from next Karbi Youth Festival at Taralangso, children’s section competition for Karbi folk songs, dances and traditional music and sports would be introduced.

Expressing his happiness on seeing the younger generations taking initiatives towards promoting the culture, Kro said Karbis have rich culture and traditions and that the spirits of the ancestors are deeply rooted among the Karbis.

Speaking about the purpose of organising the summer camp, the Tribal Cultural Research Officer (TCRO), Dilip Kathar said many children just spend their summer vacation idly doing nothing or some go busy with mobile games, thus allowing children to make use of their summer vacation in learning their traditional forms of dance and songs through the camp.

Instructor Protap Engleng detailed the training schedule and said it will be held everyday for 15 days from 2 pm onwards and requested all parents to allow their children to attend the camp on all days. Traditional dance, Ritnong Chingdi, and Lengpum Sokchon, and Oso kepadok –Karbi lullaby and  Tu va eh will be taught, he said.

A total of 73 children have enrolled for the camp.

The instructors are Jorsing Bey, Protap Engleng, Kaban Rongpharpi, Mirnim Terangpi and Sar-i’m Rongchehon.

The inaugural programme was attended by instructors, Basic Training Centre, Diphu, Sarsing Tisso; Mt. Everester Khorsing Terang; Sports person Pokhila Engtipi and president, Jambili Literary Foundation, Welsing Hanse.
