Kohima, June 25 (EMN): Despite showers and blankets of clouds over the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on Saturday, hundreds of running enthusiasts joined the Olympic Day Run organised by the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA).
Minister for Rural Development, Metsubo Jamir attended the occasion as the special guest and delivered the Olympic Day message. He stated that the first Olympic Day was celebrated on June 23, 1948 and over the past years, it has developed into something much more than a run or just a sports event.
Speaking about the theme, Jamir maintained that it includes topics such as sustainability, inclusion, solidarity and peace, aiming to bring people together to contribute to a better world through sports, while maintaining that each year, the pillar of the Olympic Day focuses on a different theme that will serve as a common global thread.
2022’s theme celebrates the power of sport to bring people together in peace, a call to action for people to move together, up to and during Olympic Day, to show their united support for a peaceful world, he stated.
Nagaland Olympics in August
Meanwhile, it was also announced that the next edition of the Nagaland Olympics will be held in August 2022 wherein every district of the state, including the newly inaugurated districts, will participate in various sports disciplines under the banner of the NOA.
‘For the first time, we will be introducing selected Paralympic events, making it the Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games 2022,’ it was informed.
In his introductory remarks, Abu Metha, Secretary General, NOA stated that sports have the power to unify people and is the most powerful tool to unite nations, while terming the participants as ambassadors of sports to unite the people.
He also pointed out that the Olympic movement has changed from ancient time till date and asserted that Nagaland is a contributing member to the Olympic family and the Indian Olympic fraternity, citing the examples of the first Indian football captain, Dr. T Ao and archer Chekrovolu Swuro.
Meanwhile, he maintained that the NOA ambition is in line with the Olympic motto and called for efforts to use sports to celebrate the talents of the Naga youths.
