Dimapur, June 20 (EMN): Peren district tobacco control cell (DTCC) organised a one-day training programme on the implementation of Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) guidelines for teachers, police, district administration, and district education officers on June 18 at District Hospital, Peren.
The programme, chaired by DNO, NTCP Peren, Dr. Sabino Kuotsu, began with an introduction of the various school representatives and the resource persons from the state tobacco control cell followed by a powerpoint presentation by the additional director and state nodal officer of NTCP, Dr. Chiekroshuyi Tetseo.
Tetseo stressed that it should be the responsibility of teachers and officers to keep their schools tobacco-free by engaging in the ToFEI activities initiated by DTCC Peren, stated a DIPR report. He also demonstrated the use of the ToFEI application and urged the teacher representatives to take enrollment seriously as it is an important means of striving toward tobacco-free institutions for the benefit of the students.
Linoka Awomi, DTCC consultant, has briefed the participants on the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Product Act (COTPA) 2003, its objectives, and its enforcement mechanism. She also spoke on the mandatory display of signage in and around the premises of the educational Institution.
While anticipating cooperation from the institutions, the Peren district tobacco control cell has decided to strive for a tobacco-free district with tobacco-free zone, areas, and institutions on the year’s theme “Tobacco – a threat to our environment, a reality.”
