Dimapur, March 3 (EMN): Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio on Thursday said that there were many students from the state who want to pursue medicine but ‘our quota is limited’.

The recent evacuation of medical students from Nagaland in Ukraine has revealed that students are “desperate to study medicine”, he said and expressed hope that the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), Dimapur will soon have a full-fledged medical college.

Rio was speaking at the inaugural function of the state’s first Cardiac Care Centre at CIHSR.

“We are trying our best to start medical college in Kohima, but there are still struggles,” he said.

He stated that ‘infrastructure is not a problem but the management of the hospital and especially scientists and specialists to work in our place are the issues’.

While assuring support to CIHSR, he said he would send the Road and Bridges department engineers and Forest department officials to make the roads with proper drainage and also for plantations, in order to create a friendly environment.

“You may not be able to reach throughout the state but I would like the hospital to train the government nurses and staff on how to take care of the hospital and handle the patients or consultation even through telephones to areas where you cannot physically reach,” he told the hospital authorities.

Further, Rio said the Cardiac Care Centre was a ‘long awaited dream’ with Catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) to provide ‘cardiology services which are badly needed in our state have been introduced’.

Stating that about 40% of the patients who come to CIHSR are from neighbouring states especially Assam, he said the cath lab facility is a huge relief for the people.

Cardiologist Dr. Avito Liegise shared that the CIHSR cardiac unit provides services including cath lab-Angiogram  and Angioplasty, pacemaker support, 2D and 4D Echo, Transesophageal Echo (TEE)- EPIQ 7C, cardiac stress testing and 24 and 48 hours Holter monitoring.

The  cath lab has the most advanced in-class Azurion series ceiling mounted fluoroscopy machine (Philips); advanced coronary interventional software like dynamic coronary roadmap and stent boosting technology; intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and functional coronary assessment (iFR) tools; and intrasight seven system that integrates all these tools into an integrated system.

“The cardiac care unit at CIHSR has some of the most advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional machinery the world has to offer. This is not just the first in the state of Nagaland, but is one of the best equipped in the Northeast,” he added.

Advisor for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Dr. Neikiesalie  Kire, Minister for Soil and Water Conservation, Geology and Mining, V Kashiho Sangtam; and Advisor for Power, Tovihoto Ayemi were also present at the event.
