Kohima, March 1 (EMN): Three students from Nagaland are stranded in war-torn Ukraine, according to an update from Nagaland Home department on Tuesday.
Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha informed Eastern Mirror that ‘families and relatives of three students (all medical students), who are stranded in war-hit Ukraine, have reached out to the state helpline numbers, specifically activated for stranded citizens from the state.
‘The Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) are in touch with all of them and they are waiting for further instructions from the embassy to be evaluated,’ he informed.
‘One is already in Poland, another in Moldova while the other is still in Ukraine but far from the war zone,’ he added.
As reported earlier by this newspaper, two medical students — Lanu Amenla Aier and Machi Yirakchang — studying at different cities in Ukraine, had set out to the neighbouring countries of Ukraine to catch a flight to India.
While Amenla Aier is staying at a military camp in Moldova, Yirakchang is currently taking shelter at a place that is a few kilometers away from the Hungarian border.
Another medical student, Olika Mlato Shikhu from Dimapur, who is studying in Ukraine’s Poltava, had moved out of the country and is currently in Poland, the Home department informed.
Nagaland government is in touch with the MEA and is closely monitoring their movements, it added.
The Home department and Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) had set up respective helpline numbers for those stranded in Ukraine to provide necessary support and assist in their evacuation.
As of Tuesday, the NSF is said to have received a call from one of the three students.
