3rd Amur falcon festival concludes in Karbi Anglong

Diphu, Nov. 12 (EMN): The 3rd edition of the three-day Amur falcon festival at Umrukhuti in Chinthong, West Karbi Anglong organised jointly by Karbi Students’ Association (KSA-Inglongpho) and 4 Season Foundation (NGO) culminated on Nov. 11.
The festival aimed to create awareness among the locals of Umrukhuti and people of Karbi Anglong in protecting Amur falcons visiting Umrukhuti area of Chinthong in West Karbi Anglong during the early part of October and mid November.
During the festival, which started on Nov. 9, activities like trekking, traditional games and sports, photography, painting and poem recitation were held. Tourists from Assam and other states witnessed the festival and the Amur falcons.
On the last day of the fest, MP Horensing Bey as chief guest stressed on the need to protect the Amur falcons and said, ‘As Umrukhuti borders Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya, the congregation of the migratory Amur falcon birds at Umrukhuti has been an attraction for local people. Even people from other places of West Karbi Anglong and outside come to see the birds. The local people have also learnt to admire the birds’.
The MP mentioned the need for accessible road up to Umrukhuti, school for local children and security arrangement for the festival. He assured that an open stage will be constructed under MPLAD scheme at Umrukhuti.
Executive Member of KAAC and in-charge P&RD and Tourism, Lunsing Teron said that KAAC is working with the people to protect the Amur falcons He assured the construction of a watch tower at Umrukhuti for bird viewing.
Informing the media, Chairman of 4 Season Foundation (NGO), Alom Rongpi said that this time more than 12 lakh birds have arrived. Apart from organising the festival, 4 Season Foundation has planned to plant more bamboos in the area, which will be supported by Soil Conservation department, KAAC, so that more Amur falcons can come and stay comfortably, as the migratory birds like to rest mostly on bamboo trees.
