Dimapur, July 25 (EMN): T
he convenor of Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC), Manpon Changkap on Sunday appealed to the state government to declare Aboi as a district on August 15.

During a press conference held at Hotel Acacia in Dimapur, Changkap stated that Mon district had nine assembly constituencies out of which Aboi had four.

The convenor of ADDC informed that the demand for Aboi as a district started in 2008 and 2009 and added that it was taken up during Cabinet discussion on November 28, 2011, when Lalthara was the then Chief Secretary of Nagaland. He said that Aboi and Noklak were listed as serial number one and two respectively, to be established as a district.

Changkap said that their primary goal was economic development and administrative convenience and added that they had ‘placed their requirements and appraised everything to the government’.

He informed that the last meeting with the chief minister was in January 2021 and according to the convenor, the government did not give assurance but the response was ‘positive’.

While giving a brief history about Aboi in Mon district, former MP and former convenor ADDC, Wangyuh Konyak said that earlier, Aboi was known as Champank and it is the oldest town.

Konyak said that in 1958, a circle officer was appointed at Aboi and on January 26, 1978, it was upgraded to EAC and later on December 8, 1997, it was upgraded to ADC headquarters.

He added that the Konyak Union also supported them and had no objection to their demand while even the neighbouring tribes — Chang, Yimchunger, Khiamniungan, Phom and Sangtam — had issued no-objection certificates.

According to Konyak, there is around 2.60 lakh Konyak population in Mon district, out of which 1.20 lakh is from Aboi.

He further informed that Aboi had all the government departments required to be a district, with 11 IR battalion established at Aboi.

Further, Konyak also informed that even if Aboi is established as a district, they had taken the firm decision to always be under the umbrella of Konyak Union.

The press conference was attended by Manpon Changkap, convenor ADDC; Wangyuh Konyak, former MP and former Convenor ADDC, Manlem Konyak Co-convener; Ashu Konyak, member ADDC and President of Aboi district organisation BJP; and Alang, press secretary of ADDC.
