Just Officially Unemployed: My Experience of College Life

First of all, I would like to smack Corona Virus for robbing me of my last year of college. How beautiful it would have been had we spent our last days of college life together with our friends! Instead, we had to pack our bags suddenly and leave without proper goodbyes. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would graduate from my room. But I strongly believe in the saying, “Everything happens for the best”.  And maybe, things took a different turn for our own good. Therefore, we forgive Corona again(Can’t really blame it anyway).

During my high school days, some teachers would warn us of the darkest days that would befall us once we attended college. We would be unable to enjoy the life of a student since we would be on our own and life would get pretty serious by then. And teachers wouldn’t bother to care for each and every pupil since all they cared about was completing their lessons on time. If only I had known they were wrong!

Having been a student of MCK (Modern College, Kohima) for three whole years, I can proudly say I have fared well and college isn’t as horrible as some tell you. It wouldn’t be exaggeration if I said God had sent me there because He knew I would feel like home. True enough, it helped me build my confidence, showed me my strengths and brought out sides in me I never knew existed. I felt loved and appreciated. I met friends who came from diverse backgrounds and our friendship blossomed which inculcated in me beautiful values. My teachers were the best part of the college. They were supportive and took good care of us from our academics to our mental health. Our strong bond helped me to open up to them which made learning easier and interesting. I have never had so much fun in my life before I attended college. I have also grown as an individual and it has helped me to analyse different issues from different angles after learning to listen to people. I have come to a realisation that every person you meet in life can teach you something as long as you are willing to lend an ear.

From what I have seen and felt, our experience of college life depends on our qualities and the principles we follow as students. If we are someone who is confident, ambitious and responsible, we are likely to enjoy learning and also grab every opportunity that knocks. And if we are someone who attends college just to obtain a degree, we are likely to get bored and become inactive and irresponsible. Therefore, we need to have a clear goal. Otherwise, there is no point. One of my teachers in college used to say, “We must not think of studying as some heavy load on our back but rather enjoy the process of learning and acquiring knowledge. Only then will we truly become educated.” I have understood what he meant. When we study with an aim to learn, being a student is one of the easiest thing to be. Also, it is the quality of education that we receive that matters rather than the college building or the campus. Understanding is more important than the grades we receive or the marks we score because at the end of the day, we are going to apply what we have learnt according to our understanding.

In such a short span of time, MCK opened up so many possibilities and laid out platforms that helped me stand without trembling. It helped me find my voice I had lost for a long time. It has been such a beautiful voyage and we come to rest on the shores today but we set sail tomorrow again.

To my fellow graduates, I pray you are happy wherever you end up in life. Today, we become a butterfly. We will now spread our wings and fly. Let’s be courageous enough to pick ourselves up every time we fall. Let’s not compare ourselves to other butterflies. Let’s be patient enough to wait and let’s be faithful and true to ourselves always. And to my juniors, I hope you learn and grow every day.  I hope you spend your college years worth lamenting for.
