Bengaluru police registers rape case against 6 persons in connection with brutal viral video

In a major breakthrough, the Bengaluru police have filed a rape and assault cases against six persons in connection with the disturbing video of a young woman being brutally tortured by some unknown individuals.

The shocking video had caused a public outrage, triggering a hunt to catch the culprits seen in the clip which had gone viral on social media.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant tweeted on Thursday that ‘a case of rape and assault has been registered against six persons, including two women at Ramamurthynagar Police Station in the city, based on the content of the video and preliminary investigation.

“A police team has also been deputed to an adjoining state to trace the victim so that she could join the investigation,” he wrote.

“According to the information revealed so far, all of them are part of the same group and are believed to be from Bangladesh. The victim who is also a Bangladeshi was brought to India for trafficking and was tortured and brutalised due to a financial matter,” he added.

The police commissioner went on to inform that “the investigation is being carried with full earnestness and under the supervision of senior officers”.

It may be mentioned that the Assam police on Wednesday announced a reward for information of the unidentified persons seen in the video.

“These images are of 5 culprits who are seen brutally torturing and violating a young girl in a viral video. The time or place of this incident is not clear. Anyone with information regarding this crime or the criminals may please contact us. They will be rewarded handsomely,” read the tweet by Assam Police.

The Kaur Movement had also taken to its Instagram page to announce reward for any information about the culprits. It announced that anyone providing information about the culprits would be rewarded INR 2 lakh and INR 10 lakh for identity all the culprits. It also announced an additional reward of 1000 dollar to anyone who can identify the woman.

Meanwhile, police had confirmed earlier that the viral video was not linked to the alleged suicide case of the Naga woman in Jodhpur on May 23. Additional Director General of Police, Delhi Police and Special Commissioner, Robin Hibu informed in a social media post that they were trying to identify the victim and the perpetrators for further action.

Youth Affairs and Sports minister Kiren Rijiju, who is also the Union Minister of State for Ministry of AYUSH, too clarified in a Twitter post that the viral video was not connected to the death of the Naga girl in Jodhpur. He added that “there must be all out efforts by all State Police to catch he devils”.
