Schools in Kohima organise neighbourhood youth parliament

On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav, the last leg of the Neighbourhood Youth Parliament in celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence was organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Kohima, in collaboration with Little Flower Higher Secondary School on Thursday.

The occasion featured a one-hour seminar where Narotola Imchen, assistant teacher from the school’s history department, and John Makhabo, director in-charge of NYKS, were part of the panellists.

Imchen, while dwelling on the topic “Indian Freedom Struggle: Life, Journey, Philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose,” gave a perceptive take on Gandhi’s life and his journey towards India’s freedom struggle and also shared accounts on Bose’s contributions toward India’s fight for independence.

Makhabo, while speaking on the topic “Role of youth in nation building,” laid emphasis on the importance of becoming “self-reliant”. He maintained that students should strive to become “job providers instead of job seekers.”

The teachers along with 104 students from Little Flower Higher Secondary School attended the programme which was organised at the school.

The celebration of India’s 75 years of Independence (Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav) kick started on March 12, 2021, with a march by over 150 volunteers from National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK).

In a similar programme, St. Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School (SMCHSS), Kohima, in collaboration with the Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), organised a neighbourhood youth parliament on March 16.

An update from Bishop House, Dimapur, stated that the programme was chaired by Temjensangla Jamir, while the introduction and welcome note was delivered by the school’s principal Rev. Fr. Jaison CJ.

In his welcome address, Jaison stressed on the growth of India in the last seventy-five years particularly on “Digital India” highlighting changes in the system of education through digital platforms.

NYKS director in-charge, John Makhabo, spoke on “Role of youth in nation building”. He enunciated about ‘Rain water harvesting,’ ‘Mudra scheme,’ ‘Swachh Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ campaigns. He further encouraged the students to aim for quality education and to empower oneself with skills for self-sufficiency.

The second session was addressed by Roseline Komuha on the theme “Indian freedom struggle- life, journey, philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose”.

It stated students and faculty attended the programme.
