Herd of wild elephants on rampage in Nagaland’s Tizit sub-division

Dimapur, Nov. 23 (EMN): Villages under Tizit sub-division in Mon district have been incurring heavy losses of plantation due to intrusion of a wild herd of elephants in the past week.
Mongau Phom, assistant sub-inspector of police at Tizit, informed Eastern Mirror that on November 22, a herd of elephants intruded into Loakkun village and destroyed tea estates and other plantations as well.
No human casualties have been reported, he informed and added that villagers of Jaboka, Neitong, Yanpan, Sakho and Loakkun were fearful of the elephants and were unable to go to their respective tea estates and paddy fields.
Phom also informed that during spot verification along with administration of Tizit and Forest department on November 17, the same herd of elephants, numbering around 25, were found to have intruded the surrounding villages which include Jaboka, Neitong, Yanpan, Sakho and Loakkun and damaged the teagardens, paddy fields and plantations of the villagers.
It was also reported that around 19 plantations of the villagers along with paddy fields and huts were destroyed by the elephants. Further, Phom informed that the herd of elephants might have escaped from Assam’s reserve forest.
