Dimapur, Sep. 24 (EMN): Longleng division of the Land Resources department conducted a training programme on designs and up-scaling of perma/potager kitchen garden concept at the district project office, Longleng, on September 23.
Delivering a brief introductory note, PBCA execution secretary, Tialemba Phom, emphasised on the role and importance of kitchen garden particularly for a land-locked district like Longleng, a DIPR report stated on Thursday.
“In a worst case scenario situation like the prevailing Covid-19 case, the necessity of self-sustaining food security setup like kitchen garden becomes very important,” Phom stated. He opined that churches and women in particular should play an important role in popularising kitchen garden concept in Longleng district.
He further lauded the department for initiating people-friendly project, which according to him, was one of its first kind in Longleng.
Kughalu Chishi, district project office, Longleng, exhorted the trainees to be attentive, learn and logically strategise the planning and layout aspects of the kitchen garden. He stated that the success of the kitchen garden concept would depend on farmers’ initiative and interest.
The training started with presentation on kitchen garden concept and its relevance, pictorial presentation of design and layouts, site selection, soil preparation, soil building, seed bank, cropping season and pattern, companion planting and its benefits and keyhole concepts.
Vegetable seeds were distributed to all selected beneficiaries. Altogether, trainees from 14 micro-watershed villages attended the training programme.
