Dimapur, April 23 (EMN): With the ongoing nationwide lockdown impacting every aspect of life, the Private Colleges Association Nagaland (PCAN) has sought the intervention of the state government on the social, economic, and academic activities confronting the students and institutions.
In a representation to the chief secretary, PCAN has expressed apprehension on the financial sustainability of private institutions if the shutdown of schools and colleges continues. Stating that failure to pay salary to teachers and staff would impact thousands more, who in turn are dependent on them, a PCAN representation appended jointly by its president Dr. PS Lorin and general secretary Vezuhu Keyho has urged the government to look into that aspect.
While making all attempts to keep the students updated with their studies and lessons through online platforms and other ICT mean, PCAN stated that many students are outside the online loop on account of poor internet connectivity within the state, while some could not afford a smart phone. In this regard, it has suggested re-opening of educational institutions at the earliest stating that various directives from higher authorities to switch over to online classes cannot be a full substitute for traditional classroom. It has, however, asked to do so only when it is deemed safe.
On the conduct of University semester examinations, which was earlier scheduled from first week of April, PCAN has urged the government to first consider before re-opening regular classes. It also urged the government to issue strict safety protocol guidelines as and when examinations are conducted and classes re-open. Besides, it has sought the equipment and health workers assistance for daily/ regular screening of students, faculty and staff.
While expressing concern on the well being of those students who are stranded in different locations, PCAN urged the government not to neglect their plight till normalcy is restored.
Pointing out that usage of online tools, video conferencing classrooms etc. would become more necessary post Covid-19, it urged the government for financial assistance to upgrade such ICT facilities.
To contain the virus and restore normalcy with safety at the earliest, PCAN has urged the state government to urgently step up its preparedness of testing, tracing, isolation and treatment standards, including availability of adequate safety equipment.
PCAN further urged the government to take the opportunity to renew its social contract with the citizens in more concrete ways.
