90% accused involved in CAW cases arrested: NB Singh

Imphal, August 4 (EMN): Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh said more than 90 percent of accused involved in Crime Against Women (CAW) cases in Manipur were arrested and actions were taken according to the law. Biren was replying to a call attention motion by opposition Congress MLA AK Mirabai on reported case of rape and murder attempt of a young girl in Senapati district during the last day session on Friday.
Informing that the new government was trying its best to curb CAW in the state by constituting the first ever first track court in Imphal, the leader of the House said necessary steps are on to arrest the accused person in Senapati case at the earliest by sending IGP and DIG ranked officers in the district.
Stating that the unfortunate incident occurred when the victim girl along with her younger sister went out to wash clothes at the river (Viewland colony, Senapati) on August 1, he informed the house of 60 members that representatives of the government had visited the victim at the hospital where she is presently undergoing treatment and provided assistance to the family. He said the government will continue to provide all possible assistance to the girl and her family and even take her outside the state for treatment if the need arise.
Expressing serious concern over the loosing of morals of the people, he reiterated that the state government has taken necessary steps into the death of a woman inside Andro police station by suspending police personnel manning the Station. He also welcomed the suggestion of MLA Mirabai to set up Fast-track courts in all districts.
Meanwhile Manipur based NGO-Women Action for Development (WAD) strongly condemned the series of heinous crime committed against the three minor girls occurred in the last few months in the state. Terming the recent incidence of rape and attempt to murder of a minor girl at Viewland Colony, Senapati on August 1, the incident of Moreh Gate 1 on July 23 where a class IX girl student was shot dead, suspicious dead body recovery of a class XI girl student from Sawombung on July 20 after her missing report on July 16 respectively are the brutal and heinous crime against humanity, WAD urged the authority to tackle the three cases of minor girls by the fast track court without delay.
Sharing its serious concern over the ‘custodial death of Mutum (O) Indira (38) who died in the custody of Andro Police Station, Imphal east District on August 1, the women’s body also demanded judicial inquiry into the incident.
