More than 87 per cent votes were in the Thongju(89.59%) and Thangmeiband (85.29%) assemblies by elections in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Saturday, according to official sources in Imphal.
The polling began in 86 polling stations-including 41 in Thongju while 45 in Thangmeiband at 7 am in the morning and ended at 4pm.Even though the polling was quite slow in the morning due to wintry weather, it goes on full swing in the afternoon both in Thongju and Thangemeiband constituencies.Saturday’s polling will decide the fate of five candidates who are contesting the by-elections in the two Assembly constituencies. Jyotin Waikhom of Congress, Kh Joykishan of BJP and G Tonsana of Manipur Democratic People’s Front(MDPF) are contesting in Thangmeiband while Bijoy Koijam of Congress ,Th Bishwajit of BJP and G Tonsana of MDPF are vying for the Thongju seat. The counting will be conducted on November 24.By polls in the two Manipur Assembly constituencies were necessitated after the Speaker’s Tribunal disqualified two All India Trinamool Congress MLAs Kh Joykishan of Thangmeiband and Th Biwajit of Thongju under the anti-defection law on May 28 this year.
