61 law students complete internship programme

Legal interns and others during the culmination programme of summer internship programme at DC’s conference hall in Kohima on August 1.

DIMAPUR — A total of 61 law students successfully completed the one-month summer internship programme organised by the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) from July 1 to August 1.

During the culmination programme held at DC conference hall in Kohima, NSLSA member secretary, Victo Sema, encouraged the law students to be perseverant and motive-driven in law profession, a DIPR report stated.

He said that the internship programme is conducted every year for law students to give them a glance of different subject matters that would find relevance in future practices, especially in different institutions related to law.

Sema also spoke about the purpose of setting up legal services authorities, asserting that it is a mandate of the Constitution in respect to Legal Services Act 1987, where the legal services authorities hierarchically exist at the national, state, districts and taluks levels.

He further said that legal services authorities are set up to create legal awareness and provide legal assistance, especially to uplift the poor and marginalised section of the society.

The principal district and sessions judge of Kohima and chairperson of Kohima District Legal Services Authority, also exhorted the interns and encouraged them to be persistent and be hardworking. She also congratulated the students for completing the internship.

NSLSA retainer lawyer, Apila Sangtam, shared her experience on legal services and legal profession. She said that legal profession is a noble profession where one should not compromise on one’s integrity.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Cherry Ovung, NSLSA panel lawyer, while the interns presented reports on the month-long programme.

A total of 61 interns undertook internship with different district legal services authorities and were given opportunity to observe court proceedings at district courts and High Court, Kohima Bench. They also visited the Lokayukta, jails, legal aid defense counsel, different homes and institutes.
