Imphal, Feb. 19: The 7th edition of 57 Mountain Division Polo Tournament 2017 got underway under the aegis of Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA) with the support of 57 Mountain Division, at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest polo ground in the world located in the heart of Imphal on Sunday.
The inaugural function was attended by GOC 57 Mountain Division Major General U Suresh Kumar as the chief guest, President Dr S Joykumar Singh of Manipur Equestrian Association and Dy GOC Brig SKS Chauhan of 57 Mountain Division, Commander Brig JS Bainsla of 9 Sector(Assam Rifles) and Director Dr H Chaoba Singh of State Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services as the guests of honour which was marked by colourful display of ‘Bhangra Dance’ by soldiers of 14 Sikh, march past by mounted players, band display and oath taking ceremony by the participating team leaders.
Stating that the tournament has been organised to support and promote the traditional game of polo, popularly known as ‘Sagol Kangjei’ which is a wonderful gift to the world by Manipur besides saving the endangered Manipuri ponies, GOC Major General Suresh said the game which was once known as the game of the Kings has now become the King of games. In the opening match, Eastern Students’ Club (ESC)-A overcame Manipur Police Sports Club (MPSC)-C 4-3 in a thrilling encounter.
