2,731 militants surrendered in Manipur to date

IMPHAL, December 19

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s many as 2,731 militants have surrendered in Manipur in the past few decades, Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam told the state Assembly on Friday.
“Over the last few decades, 2,731 militants have surrendered in Manipur,” Gaikhangam, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, said in a written reply to a calling attention motion moved by Manipur Trinamool MLA I Ibohalbi in the Assembly on the matter.
Gaikhangam said though surrender policy in the state have accorded benefit to militants, rehab centre is still short. However, the Government has been making efforts to augment such facilities, he added.
Militants in Manipur are surrendered through signing of memorandum of understandings (MoUs), suspension of operations (SoOs) and some of them individually, the Home Minister said.Rs 2.50 lakh is deposited to a bank to provide monetary incentives to all the cadres of a surrendered outfit under the surrender policy, he said, adding Rs 4,000 is given to each cadre as monthly stipend.
The Home Minister said the Government has provided jobs to three surrendered militants in the state so far.
