1st Kohima District Govt. Schools Athletic Meet held

Kohima, April 28 (EMN): The first Kohima District Government High and Higher Secondary Schools Athletic Meet was held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on Thursday.

Altogether 17 government schools in Kohima and Tseminyu participated in the one-day event. Government schools in Tseminyu are still under the District Education Office, Kohima.

Exhorting the gathering as inaugural guest, Director of School Education, Wonthungo Tsopoe said that sports and athletic meet is very important as it is part of education.

He said that as per the new National Education Policy, emphasis has been given to sports and skill development of students.

Expressing that sports and games have become a lucrative avenue, he encouraged youngsters to take up sports professionally but also not to neglect their studies. He asked them to maintain proper discipline and timing for sports and studies.

He also encouraged them saying that, while winning is important, participation is more important in life.

Tsopoe further asked the students to set their ambition in life before matriculation so that they can pursue hard and achieve it. He further hoped to have Naga boys and girls participating in the national and international level thereby bringing laurels to the state and nation.

Chaired by secretary of Tournament Management Committee, Alesh Thong, the programme commenced with prayer by Neilhousienuo, Area Education Officer SDEO, Kohima, while Dziesesakuo Rutsa, PET, TM Government HSS administered oath to the 17 participating teams.

The students took part in various athletic events. The winners are – 100m race boys – Keduhoto of John GHSS; 100m race girls – Keni Kent of GHSS Rüzhukhrie; 200m race boys – Keduhoto John GHSS; 200m girls – Keni Kent of GHSS Rüzhukhrie; 800m race boys – Mutuyi Savi of GHS Jakhama; 800m race girls – Keni Kent of GHSS Rüzhukhrie; 3000m race boys – Mutuyi Savi of GHS Jakhama; 3000m race girls – Rüükedono Yalie of GHS Khonoma; long jump boys – Neihelie Yhor of GHSS Rüzhukhrie; long jump girls – Kevineinuo Khro of TM GHSS; javelin throw boys – Metsilhouzo Rino of GHSS Jotsoma; javelin throw girls – Kikruleno Rino of GHSS Jotsoma; shot put boys – Kezhalhulie of GHS Khonoma; shot put girls – Mesalhuno Chase of GHS Khonoma; discus throw girls – Kevineinuo Khro of TMGHSS and discus throw girls and boys – Neihelie Yhor of GHSS Rüzhukhrie.
