17 persons arrested in connection with Kheroni attack
DIPHU — Karbi Anglong police on Saturday arrested 17 persons who were involved in an attack on Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) officials, while they were returning from Dongka protest rally under Kheroni Police Station in West Karbi Anglong district on Thursday.
The arrest was updated by Assam Police DGP, GP Singh, on his social media page.
“Reference scuffle at Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong District on Feb 15th, 2024 – A criminal case Kheroni PS Case No. 12/2024 U/S-341/147/143/294/120B/153A 325/307/506/427 IPC has been registered and 17 persons have been arrested till now. Assam Police would not spare anyone breaking the law or indulging in disorderly conduct. All perpetrators of violence would be arrested and taken to task. Adequate security, including additional pickets and patrolling, are being provided to instil a sense of security amongst the inhabitants of the region,” the DGP stated.
Meanwhile, the chief executive member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, has condemned the attack on Karbi youth on Thursday evening and directed the Superintendent of Police for immediate action against all culprits involved in the incident. The KAAC chief stated that action would be taken against all accused by the law and order authority.
Ronghang also informed that a meeting with ASDC leaders and leaders of KSA and KNCA would be held on February 19 at KAAC conference hall. He added that a review meeting on the status of VGR and PGR land under the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council jurisdiction would be held on February 20 at the Diphu Arboretum-cum-Craft Centre conference hall.
Meanwhile, KSA general secretary, George Timung said, “If our sole demands are not met and we will keep on protesting. The result will come out after the meeting on February 20.”
Normal life in Diphu, Bokolia, Bokajan and in Western part of Karbi Anglong was disrupted as all business establishments were closed and buses stayed off the road.
