Kohima, Jan. 23 (EMN):
Professor of Kohima Science College (autonomous), Dr. Lily Sema, goaded the youth on the need to master survival skills for positive outcome in today’s competitive world.

She stated this during the 72nd literary and cultural day of Southern Angami Students’ Union (SASU) on January 22 held at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, on the theme “Triggering competitions, exploring possibilities.” While pointing out the unemployment scenario in Nagaland, she informed that the percentage of graduates for 2020-21 stood at 98% while the total number of job applicants on the live register of Employment Exchange as on December 31, 2020, was 85,397.

Despite everyone possessing excellent grades, Lily lamented that many youth were unemployable. In this regard, she has emphasised on imparting lessons relevant to the present society.

However, she was optimistic that the National Education Policy (NEP), which was approved by the union cabinet on July 29, 2020, after a long wait of 34 years, would be significant to address developmental imperatives of the country in line with the sustainable development goals 2030.

Stating that the present gross enrolment ratio (GER) of the state was 18.7% in 2018-19 while the country stood at 26.30%, she informed that the pre-requisite GER for a rapid development of a country was 30%. Dr. Lily also informed that NEP 2020 aims to achieve 50% GER by 2035 adding that the state expenditure on education should be increased from 3% to 6% GDP.

On the occasion, meritorious awards were given to 18 successful students.

In the traditional fire making competition, team Kekhuvi Thao from Jakhama village secured the first position, while team Tepechosa Kiso from Kidima village and team Vineito Zütso from Kigwema secured the second and third positions respectively.

In the food preparation competition, Phesama Students’ Union, Mima Students’ Union and Kigwema Students’ Union were declared winners respectively. Competitions on folk songs, extempore, solo, Mr & Miss SASU 2022 were also organised.
