Guwahati, August 22 : The Second Northeast India Women Peace Congregation and Women led Non-violence Peace Movements in Northeast India would be held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakhetra in Guwahati on August 24 and 25.

Speaking in a press meet, Ms Binalakshmi Nepram at Guwahati Press Club from Control Arms Foundation of India said that it has been organised to bring women together for bringing peace to the region.

She said, “Women in the region are excluded of decision-making structures and are discriminated due to cultural, ethnical reasons, patriarchal structure and customary laws. Northeast India has been a part of seventeen peace-talks for the past seventeen years with few of them ever reaching a long term viable solution. A cursory glance would reveal that the number of women in all these talks and negotiations have been two, out of which one is only alive now.”
The forthcoming congregation is being organised as North East region has been affected by conflicts for decades. A home for nearly 45 million people with 272 ethnic communities has witnessed loss of thousands of people in last six decades of violence. This congregation aims at more discussion and participation of women in seeking peace in the region. Women leaders from 8 states will congregate in Guwahati for 2nd Northeast India Women Peace Congregation.

The press meet was also addressed by Reena Mutum, Indrani Deb and Shabina Hussain Nogbri and was organised by Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, Control Arms Foundation of India & Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace.
