Imphal, August 3(EMN): Manipur Chief Minister N B Singh who holds the home portfolio on Thursday informed the ongoing assembly that government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the dead of a woman inside a police station in Imphal East district. Four police personnel who were on duty during the incident have been suspended from service and no duty has been assigned to the said officer in charge, Singh said. Although he did not elaborate on the modalities of the magisterial inquiry, he termed it as an “unfortunate incident.”
According to sources, a woman identified as Mutum Ongbi Indira (38) of Andro Khuman Leikai was reported dead inside the toilet of Andro police station in Imphal East district on Tuesday. Singh informed assembly that Indira was picked up by the police on Monday for questioning in connection with the missing of one S Sunibala of the same locality based on a complaint by the husband of the missing housewife
However, surprisingly Indira was found hanging with a piece of cloth from the toilet’s ventilation a day after she was detained in police custody when a lady Constable who escorted her to toilet, checked the room as she did not come out. Locals tried to storm the police station after hearing the news about the suspicious death of Indira who is the mother of four children. The dead body of the lady has been handed over to the family, police sources claimed.
