Wildlife division observes Earth Day across state

Officials of Kiphire wildlife division and Phek forest division along with the village functionaries on the occasion of Eareth Day celebration in Chizami town on April 22.

Dimapur, April 26 (EMN): Wildlife Division of the state forest department observed the Earth Day across the state on April 22 on the theme ‘Protect our species.’

To mark the occasion, programmes were held at Lozaphuhu and Chizami villages in Phek district as well as in Phuvkiu and Fakim villages in Kiphire district.

The Kiphire Wildlife Division in association with Phek Forest Division conducted a programme for the students of Classes IX and X at GM Government High School, Chizami. Participants included the department staff, members of five villages of Chizami, Thetsumi, Tsupfiime, Zelume and Enhulumi VCCs – which form part of the Tshekwelu Community Reserve, village elders, leaders and general public.

The meeting was led by Erilhi T Mero, beat officer, Chizami, who delivered the introductory speech. All the VCCs present shared the importance and interest in the conservation of the environment. The meeting concluded with all the members present agreed in principle to reaffirm and protect the wildlife.

The programme concluded by undertaking a sight-seeing to Tsekhwelu Community Reserve at Chuvike Forest, Chizami, led by all the VCCs, village elders and leaders.

In a similar programme, Kiphire Wildlife Division in association with Phek Forest Division conducted a programme at the village panchayat hall, Lozaphuhu village. The programme was attended by the council members, Gaonburas, members of the students’ union and youth body. The programme was marked with a speech by Sherunyi Kotso, deputy ranger and range-in-charge of Phek Range.

The Kiphire wildlife division also organised a programme at Government Primary School (GPS), Phuvkiu village, Kiphire. The programme was led by Asuka Y, in-charge of the school.

In a brief introduction, the significance of the day was presented by Tokavi Assumi, Forester I, while Inoheto, Forest Guard, spoke on the history of Earth Day and importance of preservation and protection of species. The programme was attended by village council representatives, GBs, teachers and students.

The Kiphire wildlife division also organised a programme at the community education and recreation centre, Fakim village, Kiphire.

The programme was led by K Kiusang, RFO, Kiphire Wildlife Division. He spoke on the ways and means to better preserve and protect the environment. A short speech was also presented by Alemba Yimchunger, game guide.

Earlier, Alemba was awarded by Earth Day Network and declared as “Earth Day Network Star.”

Tsangnule Yimchunger, GB of Fakim village, shared his appreciation to the Kiphire Wildlife Division for organising such an event at Fakim village for the first time. He further pledged to support the department in its future endeavours.

The programme was attended by students, village council members, GBs and staffs of the division.
