Dimapur, June 6 (EMN):
An intense spell of rainfall is likely to continue over the Northeast India and Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next five days, alerted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday.

The IMD reported that due to the influence of strong south westerly winds from Bay of Bengal to Northeast India in lower tropospheric levels, widespread light or moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, as well as Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next five days.

The department updated that on June 7 and 8, districts namely Mon, Longleng, Tuensang, Kohima and Peren are likely to experience widespread rainfall, while Mokokchung, Kiphire, Phek and Dimapur may experience fairly widespread rainfall and scattered rainfall likely in Zunheboto and Wokha.

On June 9 and 10, Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Kiphire and Phek are likely to experience fairly widespread rainfall, while Mon, Longleng, Tuensang, Kohima and Peren districts are likely to continue experiencing widespread rainfall.

The department said that isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Meghalaya from June 8 to the 10th.

It also warned that due to very heavy or extremely heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal-Sikkim during the next five days and over Arunachal Pradesh from June 7 to the 10th, localised flooding of roads, water logging in low laying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas can occur.

It added occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall; disruption of traffic in major cities due to water logging in roads leading to increased travel time; minor damage to kutcha roads; possibilities of damage to vulnerable structure; localised landslides/mudslides; and damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to flood.

The department suggested the public to check traffic congestion on one’s routes before travelling; to follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard; avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often; and to avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
