Violence broke out in Peren after a mob tried to enter the counting centre, which led the police to retaliate on Thursday.

IGP and State Police Nodal Officer, Limasunep Jamir, while addressing a press conference in Kohima, said the incident took place outside the ADC office in Peren where 500 youths tried to enter the office demanding for re-poll, which was not mandated as per the direction of the EC.

‘One of the political parties was not happy with the EVMs, counting and other issues. But there were absolutely no irregularities,’ the police officer said.

In the process to stop the mob, the police and CAPFs had to resort to lathi charge, tear gas shelling and blank firing at the mob but there was no report of injury, he assured.

He added the situation is now under control.

‘The security is well placed and all district SPs, DCs, officers on the ground are monitoring the situation and so far no adverse report has come. The police will continue the vigil till such time it is necessary,’ he said.

The general law and order situation on the counting day has been peaceful except for this one incident in Peren, Jamir added.

He appealed to the citizens of the state not to take law into their hands.

‘The democratic mandate has to be respected and accepted,’ he said and further appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquility.

Noklak incident: PM results awaited

The police officer said the post mortem of a person who died in the clash between police and protestors in Noklak was compeleted on Thursday.

The dead body was handed over to the family members and mortal remains have been laid to rest.

However, the result of the post mortem is still awaited and will be out in a day or two, he informed.
