Youth parliament and debate competitions on “Emergency period in India” were held in Mon and Wokha under the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme 2025.

Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme: Youth parliament, debate contests held in Mon, Wokha

DIMAPUR — As part of the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme 2025, district-level youth parliament and debate competitions on the theme “Emergency period in India” were conducted in Mon and Wokha on August 6.


The events were organised by the respective District Youth Resource offices in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) units of participating colleges.


The event in Mon was held at Wangkhao Government College (WGC), Mon, according to a DIPR report.


Assistant Professor of WGC, Wanom Y Konyak, who chaired the event, stated that the objective of organising this programme was to simulate the functioning of a parliamentary session and encourage youth to understand democratic processes, develop public speaking skills, and debate relevant issues.

The participants were judged according to their understanding of parliamentary procedures, content relevance and quality, communication and clarity, engagement and responsiveness, and team coordination and role performance.


The winner of the debate from the proposition team was Temnyei M Konyak from the English Department (1st semester), and from the opposition was L Lempa W from the Political Science Department (1st semester).


The winners of the youth parliament were Nahpho F Konyak from the Political Science department (5th semester), Ngunlih W Konyak from the Political Science department (1st semester), and T Pangong Konyak from the Education Department (5th semester), taking the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, respectively.

In Wokha, the event was held at Bailey Baptist College. In the debate competition, Shyerhunle Seb from Mt. Tiyi College won the first position on the opposition side, while Lansothung Jami from Bailey Baptist College, Wokha, bagged the first position for the motion.


In the youth parliament competition, Mhabeni Ezung from Mt. Tiyi College, Tumchobeni M Kikon from Bailey Baptist College, Wokha, and Nchumbemo Ezung from Mt. Tiyi College stood first, second, and third, respectively.


Rhukumo Kikon, councillor and convenor of Urban Planning and Development, attended the occasion as the special invitee.


The programme was chaired by K Libemo Jami, assistant director, Youth Resources and Sports, while the welcome address was delivered by T Penthungo Lotha, principal of Bailey Baptist College.


Dr. Longshibemo Yanthan, A Loreno Tranglao, and Hokanili Sumi formed the panel of judges.
