Dimapur, Jan. 19 (EMN): Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences has launched the Brucellosis vaccination on January 19.

Speaking at the launch event, the department director Dr. Budhi Lama urged upon all the field officials to sincerely implement the programme and make the state free from Brucellosis. He also cautioned to strictly follow the vaccination protocols for their own safety and effective vaccination.

An update from the department stated that Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease which often leads to abortion in infected cows also known as contagious abortion or Bang’s disease. It mentioned that Bovine brucellosis is a serious disease of livestock that has significant animal health, public health and international trade consequences.

Apart from the huge economic losses in animals, the disease could affect humans even causing infertility. It added that high brucellosis prevalence in animals pose greater risk of disease transmission to animal handlers, veterinarians and is a menace to livestock farming community and butchers.

As the disease was considered a major obstacle in international trade of livestock and animal products, the government of India has come up with a policy of Brucellosis control programme in cattle with calf hood vaccination with Brucellaabortus S19 vaccine between 4-8 months of age.

It stated that Brucellosis control programme is a central sponsored scheme (CSS) during 2021-22, an initiative by the Prime Minister of India.

It further stated that the programme is being implemented on mission mode and strictly monitored by government of India. All vaccines are supplied by the government of India.
