United Brothers FC lifts 3rd Hmar Martyrs’ Trophy

Diphu: United Brothers FC lifted the 3rd Hmar Martyrs’ Trophy by defeating the Hills United FC via a tie-breaker at Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) stadium on Tuesday evening.

Sinlung Football Club organised the event in memory of Hmar youths who died in the May 16, 1989 incident in Mizoram, during an altercation between volunteers of Hmar People’s Committee (HPC) and Mizoram police.

After a goalless first half, the United Brothers FC took the lead after Joseph Mayoma scored a goal just six minutes into the second half. However, the Hills United FC found an equalizer after Bishnu Bordoloi converted a penalty into a goal in the 26th minute.

With the score line standing at 1-1 even after an additional time of 30 minutes, the game went to penalties to decide the winner. United Brothers FC eventually won 3-2 to lift the title.

The champions took home a cash prize of INR 1 lakh, while the runners-up were awarded INR 50,000.

Prasanjit Haorambam and Bishnu Bordoloi of Hills United FC were announced Best Goalkeeper and Best Player of the Tournament respectively, while Vikash Balmunchu of Singhason FC received top scorer award.
