UNC agitations begin with picketing on public offices
Imphal, Jan 3: Picketing of public offices of the Senapati district administration has begun today. A mob while trying to break through barricades put up across a road leading to the mini Secretariat (DC office) was stopped by security personnel and police.
The event is understood to be part of intensified agitations called by the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex civil organisation of Manipur Nagas, against the arrest of UNC leaders Gaidon Kamei (UNC’s president) and Stephen (UNC’s Info. And publicity secretary) by the Manipur police on November 25 last year and against the newly created 7 districts by the Manipur government on the midnight of December 8, 2016. Tear gas shells and batons were used to disperse the mob.
In the tussle and attempt to disperse the mob, six persons sustained minor injuries by tear gas shells and batons.
According to police, the situation was under control. However, security around the secretariat complex was beefed up.
The UNC has been protesting the creation of the new districts, by imposing an indefinite economic blockade along national highways leading to Manipur, since the 1st of November, 2016.
