U-17 Women’s Football: Nagaland win first match

Kohima, June 22 (EMN): Nagaland’s under-17 girls’ team won its first match against Ladakh 2-1 at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium practice ground, at Guwahati on Wednesday at the ongoing Hero Junior (U-17) Women’s National Football Championship that began on June 18.

The Nagaland team scored the first goal through Dziezechunuo in the 40th minute. This was followed by another goal from Chimmushe’s boot after a gap of four minutes, which turned out to be the deciding goal, as the opponent managed to score only one goal throughout the match.

Aliya Ashraf scored the lone goal for Ladakh in the 69th minute.

Chimmushe was later awarded player of the match for her fine display.

On the girls’ performance, Nagaland State Coach, Ropfu Meyase observed that it was a well contested match with Nagaland dominating the first half, while Ladakh played better in the second half. “We will try to give our best in the next two matches”, the coach added.

Nagaland girls will take on Kerala on June 24 and Punjab on June 26. The team is clubbed in Group E alongside Ladakh, Punjab and Kerala.

Meanwhile, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, Zale Neikha tweeted, “A big congratulations to team Nagaland women (U-17) for winning their 1st match at National Women Football Championship”.

The championship began on June 18 and will culminate on July 4 in Guwahati, Assam. A total of 34 teams are participating in eight groups, with the teams in each group set to play against each other for the qualifying stage. The winners of each group will play the quarter final matches.

The tournament is being held in five venues – Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sai New Field – Paltan Bazar, Nehru Stadium, Lnipe- Sonapur, and Dimakuchi Stadium in Guwahati.
