Suspension bridge now connects Leangha – Shiyong

Suspension Bridge over River Tenang connecting Leangha and Shiyong villages constructed under DUDA, Social Infrastructure Development Fund (SIDF) 2010-11 was formally inaugurated by, MLA & chairman NKVIB & DPDB Mon N Thongwang Konyak on January 29 at Thromhong field.Thongwang in his inaugural speech, said that people of Leangha and Shiyong villages are fortunate to have the bridge because only the said bridge had been taken up by the government for construction out of the 28 proposed suspension bridges in the state. He informed that the proposal for construction of the bridge was submitted to the Government in 2009 by him, keeping in view the importance of the bridge to the people.
Informing that many development schemes would be initiated and taken up shortly he appealed to the people to remain united and continue to support the Government for all round development of his constituency and assured to fulfil the aspirations of the people. He also thanked the people of Shiyong village for clearing the roads for the visiting officials.
SDO (C) Wakching Manpai speaking on behalf of the district administration said that the bridge in the present context may be useful only to the people of few villages but the significance of the bridge bears a very good historical background, and appealed to the people to uphold the value of our culture and its route. He also urged upon the people to extend cooperation to the elected representatives and the Government for all round community development.
SDO (DUDA) Moba in his short speech called upon the people to have ownership of the bridge and to support the Government for more visible development.
The Chief Angh of Leangha Yanglem Angh in his welcome speech spoke on the significance of the bridge in the bygone years and lauded the MLA for constructing the bridge for the people.
It may be mentioned that the road via this bridge was the only route to Assam for the entire district of Mon in the past. The first bridge was build by the British in the same location way back in 1929, later it was constructed by the people of Chi, Leangha and Totok in 1963 and the present construction is initiated for the third time.
Short speeches were also delivered by Pangkai Chairman Village council, Shiyong and Tingtong, President NPF 46 A/c; Mon. Invocation was done by Chingkhak Deacon, Leangha village while benediction was offered by Mr. Talem Youth Director, Leangha village. The program was attended by the leaders of Shiyong and Leangha villages led by the chairmen, Anghs and head GBs.
