Lumami, March 17 (EMN):
Governor of Nagaland and Assam Professor Jagdish Mukhi on Thursday observed that the people of Nagaland had great expectations from the intellectual class of the University for solving the ongoing imbroglio, for achieving and establishing sustainable peace and durable socio-political order for a peaceful, prosperous and stable Nagaland.

In this connection, the Governor asserted that the success of Nagaland University and the relevance of its teaching community in particular will be judged by the future generation based on its ability to solve the contemporary socio-political, economic and development challenges.

The governor was speaking as the chief guest at the 5th convocation ceremony of Nagaland University at I Ihoshe Kinimi Hall in Lumami, Zunheboto district.

Mukhi also congratulated NU, teachers, and officials for meeting the requirements of the academic calendar as per the UGC, despite the challenges of Covid-19 pandemic and other structural impediments.

He further lauded the NU for being fully prepared and geared up for implementing the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from the forthcoming academic session, 2022-23.

He added that if NEP 2020 is implemented successfully, it would bridge the gap between job seekers and job givers plus create a pool of young minds empowered with the element of innovation, creativity and desired skills to meet the national as well as the global standards.

To the students he said “If knowledge that you have acquired over the period of time has made you inclusive and democratic in thinking, then you have got the right education and you are on the right path.”

Mukhi further challenged them that their education would be complete and meaningful if the knowledge imparted by their teachers enable them to become the part and parcel of police and decision making processes that can help in “wiping out the tears from the eyes of old, infirm, deprived and marginalised.”

Mukhi also lamented that there was a time when India was the knowledge guru of the world but today, ‘our youths are going outside in search of knowledge’.

The Governor, who is also the chief rector of Nagaland University, argued that the tragedy of the education system has been focused on western ideas and philosophy, ‘forgetting our ancient wisdom and knowledge’.

He said that the West has made remarkable strides in the field of science and technology that has made human lives comfortable, “but at what cost?”

He reasoned that rapid industrialisation facilitated by industrial revolution caused immense damage to planet earth — global warming and climate change contributing to unbearable and inexplicable human miseries.

He also wondered why ‘we are not at peace’ despite being interconnected and interdependent via internet, mobile and cable TV as a global village.

In this connection, Mukhi asserted that ‘if we are to emerge as a global responsible power, a Jagat Guru, then we must discover our roots, blend them in our curricula and syllabi and synergise them with the requirements of the modern time’.

“Discover our tradition and ancient knowledge system to emerge as a resurgent Bharat (India) and a self-confident nation to lead the world on the just and virtuous path,” he said.

Earlier, Professor Pardeshi Lal, Vice Chancellor of NU delivered the welcome address and report of the university followed by conferment of degrees.

A total of 111 candidates were conferred with gold medals and 194 candidates were conferred with degree certificates during the function.
