Strike hits life in Manipur

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]ormal life was severely affected in view of the 12-hour dawn-to-dusk general strike in Manipur on Wednesday.
The 5 am to 5 pm statewide general strike was called by the Maoist Communist Party Manipur to protest against the merger of Manipur into Indian union and also to protest various anti-people activities taken up by the congress party and its sitting MP Dr T Meinya Singh during their rule, according to a press statement of Nonglen Meetei of the armed group.
The busy Imphal town wore desolate look since early morning till the end of the strike. All the educational institutions, business establishments including the banks and busy Ima market in the heart of Imphal town besides important market places such as Singjamei, Kwakeithel, Lamlong, Palace gate, North AOC all around the Imphal town were also remained closed during the general strike.The usual inter-state and inter district passenger bus/taxi or even city auto services were also affected in view of the strike. However the strike could not affect the normal air traffic and movement of polling personnel along with security forces for the Lok Sabha polls on April 17.

succumbs to injury
The care taker of a fuel go down who sustained serious burn injuries in a fire incident at Tera Khuraijam Leirak house in Imphal West district last night incident succumbed to his injuries this morning, reports available here said.
The fire victim care taker Oinam Sanayaima (42), son of one Biramani of Ninghoukhong who was admitted to the hospital with 80 percent burn injuries during a devastating fire last night at Tera Khuraijam Leirak battling for his life since last night expires at Shija hospitals at Langol around 7.10 am this morning.
It may be recalled that the house where the fire broke out belongs to one Binamadhop Sharma, a diesel dealer and it is located around 50 metres away from Takyel CIPET boys hostel.
Following the incident, the local clubs of Tera Khuraijam Leikai resolves to ban selling of fuel in black in their locality. A meeting was also held in this regard,a source added. Last night’s incident happened a day after Manipur Fire Service department commenced to observe weeklong National Fire Service Day.
