Kohima, Dec. 3 (EMN): The much-awaited traditional stone pulling ceremony organised by Mezomia Mechii Kehou, in collaboration with the Tourism department, to commemorate the 142-year-old peace treaty between the British and people of Mezoma village will take place on December 6 from 11 am.

The announcement was made by Neivikuolie Nicholas Khatsii, convenor of the organising committee, during a press briefing on Saturday in Kohima. He apprised that the stone pulling event, which is being held as part of the Hornbill Festival, will be held to commemorate the historic Anglo-Naga Peace Treaty signed on March 27, 1880, in Mezoma after the hostility between the British and Angami Nagas.

Though it was not written, Khatsii, informed how this concordat was performed traditionally over the years.

“The treaty culminated in cessation of conflict between the two warring factions — Nagas and British,” he said adding that the Angami Nagas had not gone against the White people thereafter.

It was informed that during the event, a pamphlet would be released giving detailed accounts on how the British expedition was carried out into the Angami Naga territory and how the villagers resisted the mighty British empire before the treaty was finally signed. It was apprised that the stone, which is about 4 feet in breadth and 14 in length with a massive weight, would be pulled by some 300 strong men to an approximate distance of 700-800 m from the western side of the village.

Demonstration of Naga wrestling by young boys, village walk featuring scores of participants sporting the popular, heavy and huge headgears of Mezoma with full traditional attires will be some of the highlights during the event.

Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, will attend the momentous occasion as the chief guest, while a host of guests from both within and outside of the state have been invited to be part of the festivities.

An official informed that they are expecting an audience of 3500 people.

Citizens including tourists wishing to attend the event are asked to reach Mezoma, which is about 20 km from the capital city.
