Dimapur, Sep. 27 (EMN): Nagaland will join the rest of the country in conducting a mass social work dubbed as ‘Plastic Shramdan’ on October 2. The cleanliness drive is aimed specifically at collecting plastic wastes as part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – Cleanliness is Service’ which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The plastic waste recycling campaign will be held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, informed an update from DIPR.

The nation-wide campaign will target collection of plastic wastes in all cities, towns and villages of the country including the highways and major roads. The collected plastic wastes will be segregated and sent to cement plants and road-making agencies for recycling and other purposes.

In Nagaland, the campaign is being spearheaded by Urban Development department in collaboration with other government departments, including the army and paramilitary forces. DCs, administrative officers and ULBs will organise the social work in the towns, while PHE and RD departments will carry out the campaign in the villages with the help of VDBs and Village councils. The update also informed that the department of National Highways and Roads and Bridges has been entrusted to collect the plastic wastes along the highways and major roads.

Mass collection drives should be conducted in all residential premises, all offices (central, state and private), educational institutions, religious places, parks, tourist spots, hotels and restaurants, stadiums and public grounds, market places, hospitals and clinics, industrial areas, national and state highways, nullahs and streams etc., said the update.

The collected plastic wastes will be segregated before sending to cement plants. Transportation of collected waste in rural areas will be managed by the Rural Development and PHED departments, and in urban areas by ULBs.

March for total plastic ban in Kohima
As part of awareness campaign on enforcement of total ban on single-use plastic under Kohima Sadar starting October 1, the SDO (C) Sadar, Kohima in collaboration with Kohima Village Youth Organisation, Chedema Village Youth Organisation and Chedema Model Village Youth Organisation conducted an awareness march in their respective village jurisdictions on September 27 morning.

An update from DIPR informed that the volunteers distributed pamphlets to the people to sensitise and create awareness in their respective villages during the march. The youth organisations also organised flash mob by distributing pamphlets to the office goers and business community at Youth Resource Office and Secretariat Junction of their respective villages on the same day.

The pamphlet, which was about plastic ban in Kohima, urged the public to “be a part of solution, not a part of the pollution.”
