State observes National Handloom Day with weavers

Dimapur, Aug. 7: Weavers Service Centre (WSC), Dimapur, along with the State government observed the 5th National Handloom Day at Darogajan village council hall, Dimapur, on August 7 with the participation of award recipients, entrepreneurs, exporters and about 160 weavers from 11 districts of the State.

Speaking on the occasion, special guest and Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kevekha Kevin Zehol, advised the public to use more of handloom products as they are eco-friendly and has economic potentials for a sustainable livelihood. He called upon the weavers not to lose their creativity and urged them to learn from each other and share their success stories.

The DC appreciated Dr. V Sivakkumar, Deputy Director of WSC, and his team for effective implementation of various schemes and activities undertaken for the benefit of the weavers of the State. The DC also suggested organising a tour for successful weavers to other districts in order to encourage other weavers for taking such kind of setups throughout the State.

Managing Director of Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation (NIDC), CM Lotha, in his address, appreciated WSC Dimapur for joining with NIDC to make SC/ST hub for the development of SC/ST entrepreneurs in the State.

General Manager of District Industries Centre (DIC), Dimapur, P Tokugha Achumi implored to avail the benefit schemes of “Loin loom.” Stating that loin loom is the traditional practise in the State, he urged the weavers to retain and pass on to younger generations.

Special invitees Athu Lusang, Deputy Director of KVIC, and Atula Lemtur, also were present during the 5th NHD celebration. During the programme, eminent weavers, designers, cluster development executives, exporters, entrepreneurs were honoured with Naga shawl, memento and certificates.

To mark the celebration, Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, inaugurated the stalls showcasing the samples/ products developed by Weavers Service Centre.

Dr. V Sivakkumar, Deputy Director of WSC, welcomed the dignitaries, award recipients, weavers, entrepreneurs, and exporters.

To mark the day, M/s KDMS issued the weavers identity card, yarn pass book for obtaining yarn at subsidised rate for the Darogajan handloom weavers.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks followed by singing of National Anthem.

Workshop on exploring handloom schemes

On the occasion of 5th National Handloom Day, Weaver Service Centre (WSC), Dimapur, organised a workshop on exploring handloom schemes with the participation of district functional managers and inspectors from the department of Industries and Commerce and 120 weavers.

During the workshop, Ekonthung Tsanglao, NHDC coordinator, Dimapur, explained about “Yarn supply scheme and e-Dhaga offered by NHDC,” while Saurav Sarma, Deputy Manager and Credit Analyst, Dimapur, explained on “Schemes of MUDRA, PMJJBY, PMSBY.” Nise Iralu, IGNOU regional director, explained about “Educational opportunity for handloom weavers through IGNOU” and Dr. V Sivakkumar, WSC Deputy Director, Dimapur, explained about “Schemes for handloom weavers through O/o DCH.”

The workshop concluded with an interaction session among weavers and various handloom stakeholders.
