Special police for tourists’ safety during Hornbill

Orientation programme for tourist police underway at PHQ, Kohima

Kohima, Nov. 17 (EMN): As the countdown for the mega Hornbill Festival nears an end, the state government is trying to leave no stones unturned to make the visiting tourists enjoy a pleasant and memorable stay. Among this is the deployment of tourist police during the festival, the orientation programme for which was formally started at PHQ, Kohima on Saturday evening. The five-day orientation programme for Tourist Police in collaboration with the Tourism department will be held from Nov. 19 till the 23rd.
John Longkumer , DGP in his inaugural session said Nagas are known for hospitality and this initiative was to re-invent that concept with added strength of safety and security. He asked the trainees to learn thoroughly during the orientation programme so as to which can ensure good hospitality for the tourists during the festival.

The DPG further impressed upon the trainees to give their best and create a safe and secure environment for the tourist during their stay. Besides, he called upon the concern police officers to be strict on the rowdies and work hard for smooth function of the festival.
T. Mhabemo Yanthan, secretary, tourism asked the state to take responsibility in taking care of the tourist while adding that the cost of not caring for tourists means losing of travellers to the state and incurring unacceptable losses in tourism revenues, employment, investment, image and pride.

“As a government, we play a crucial role part in creating an environment that is conducive for business to flourish, ” said Yanthan.
Akhale Vizol, additional director (HOD) said the long felt need of such a system has became a reality and further thanked the police department for taking the initiative.

The five-day orientation program will be held with YouthNet, police, security, administrative, home department, Nagaland Tourism department, All Nagaland Taxi Association, Hoteliers and restaurant union Kohima for security and safety of the tourists. On Nov. 23, Nagaland Tourist Police will be formally launched.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (range), Nagaland, Sonia Singh informed that 73 tourist police will be deployed during the hornbill festival

. The tourist police force will including 50 females from 15th NAP and 23 males of DEF Kohima. She said it was needed to address the grievance of the tourist, build the confidence of the tourist, avoid harassment and create a hassle free and memorable stay for the tourist. The deployment of the tourist police will be in railway station and airport, Dimapur, Chumukedima check gate and 12 sectors in Kohima for both north and south zone.

FIR app. to be launched
First Information Report application linked with the police control room will be launched very soon to facilitate the peaceful stay of tourists and also general public. Sonia Singh said FIR is a SOS application made for public safety especially women, senior citizens and tourists. The mobile application will enable individuals seek immediate help from the police station on a single tap of help button. The location received by the control room is forwarded to the concerned mobile units and officer-in-charge of different police stations.

The application will worked on android, I.O.S and Windows and works without internet in android phones. She said FIR was already launched in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir Haryana, and Uttarakhand.

She said a grievance redress mechanism was set up to receive and act on complaints and grievances reported by tourist wherein 24 hrs control room has been activated. It shall be manned by 12 dedicated police personnel and tourism officer under the additional SP Kevizun Ezung. Two dedicated gypsy and motorcycles have been deployed to attend to all calls.
