Kohima, April 10 (EMN): To equip the School Management Committee (SMC) with vital information including programme goals, roles and responsibilities, composition, guidelines as well as introduction to new interventions, the District Mission Authority (DMA) SSA, Kohima, has organised a community mobilisation and sensitisation training for Kohima district on April 10 at Ura Academy.
Emphasising that community level structures play a vital role in micro planning of school management system, SSA State Mission Director, Gregory Thejawelie, said the training is being organised to highlight specific need of the community.

He also asked the members present to introspect if they are really living up to the goals that has been set up under communitisation by responsibly addressing the issues according to the needs of their respective areas.
While pointing that there are limitations from the government, Thejawelie said it is the duty of the SMC and all concerned to function accordingly in a joint efforts to ensure attainment of programme goals.
SDEO Kohima, Talinganla, said the purpose of education is not only scoring good marks, but preparing the students to face the challenges of life in reality. Hence, she asserted that it is time to shift from the traditional model of education to global civility and ideas and ensure that students are well prepared to face that challenges
Also speaking on the occasion, DDEO Kohima, Neizetuonuo, commented that though the government of today has come up with various schemes and programmes for enhancing quality education, unfortunately there are many factors that hinder the smooth functioning of these programmes due to less awareness of our rights, roles and responsibilities.
She said the need of the hour is to raise awareness, hold periodic meetings, coordination programmes and facilitate in knowledge sharing in order to have a fruitful outcome out of these programmes.
SMC being educators and concern community denizens, she said SMC has great responsibility towards identifying the needs, ensuring proper planning, implementation and monitoring for the smooth functioning of the schools.
Neizetuonuo also shared her concern wherein teachers often were overburdened with non-academic activities and deployed in other duties like census work, election duties etc and misappropriation of funds meant for development of the schools are diverted in other activities.
While strongly asserting that such kind of anomalies should be strictly checked and regulated, she maintained that SMC should ensure that fund utilisation are done in proper and dutiful manner with integrity and records well maintained.
Another concern she raised was on the misunderstanding in which SMC members thought that they were inducted on permanent basis, whereas the government mandated 3 years tenure.
In this regard, she said chances should be given to new members and also women members so that new ideas and initiatives could be formulated for the development and progress of the schools.
She also encouraged the members to share ideas and needs to enable the department try its best in channelling the valuable suggestions and best practices for recommendations to the state and to the centre for future actions.
Also encouraging the members she said, ‘let us be a source of motivation and ensure effective community participation and academic enrichment.’
The day-long programme discussed on various topics like RTE Act 2009, roles and responsibilities of School Management Committee (SMC), inclusive education, special training, quality, civil works, swachh bharat, UDISE, CAL social audit, accounting and financial, Pedhe Bharat Badhe Bharat, Shagun.
It was informed that the community mobilisation and sensitisation training will be conducted throughout the State in all the 46 Educational Block Resource Centres (EBRCs).
