Signature campaign for girl child welfare begins in Wokha

Dimapur, Dec. 3 (EMN): In a move to create awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girl child, the Wokha district administration organised a signature campaign supporting “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (BBBP) at police point junction Wokha on Dec. 3 at 11 am. The campaign will continue till Dec. 5 at the same venue and NST junction.
The BBBP (save the girl child, educate the girl child) campaign was launched by the government of India in 2015 with an aim to help all the girl child in the country avail the welfare schemes meant for them and ensure that they get proper education.

ADC, Wokha, Mhathung Tsanglao said during the event that a series of programmes and activities have been undertaken across the town “to spread awareness about the importance of safeguarding and educating the girl child” since BBBP was launched in the district in October this year, said a statement released by Zuben, IA, Wokha.

Tsanglao stated that birth of girl child is being considered a taboo in some parts of the country but “such kind of practice in not prevalent in our state.” He said that “we should not consider having a girl child as a burden but should consider it as an asset and give equal opportunity without any gender bias because they can become responsible and productive members of the society if proper care and education is given.”

He reminded the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 that bans prenatal sex determination and warned that “illegal operation of girl child after detection is an offence under the law.” He added that “we should all celebrate the birth of girl child because every creation is a gift of God.”
Tsanglao also introduced the local champions, who will lead the signature campaign, during the launch function. Among those who will participate in the campaign include Mhonbeni L.Ezung, who was bestowed with the National Bravery Award in 2015 at the age of eight for rescuing her drowning grand
