Shutter down in Nagaland’s Mon town over extortion

Dimapur, Sep. 7 (EMN): Konyak Union (KU), Mon unit has informed all shopkeepers to down shutters in Mon town from 6 am to 6 pm on Sep. 9, in accordance with a bandh organised by Mon block civil societies against extortion and harassment taking place in the market area.

KU, in a statement on Wednesday, stated that an emergency coordination meeting with the advisory board, Konyak Nyepuh Sheko Khong Mon unit, Mon Area Students’ Union, Mon Town Students’ Union, Private Transport Association Mon and Mon Chamber of Commerce and Industry was held on September 6 at Konyak Union Mon Unit Conference Hall regarding the market situation.

It stated that Mon town shopkeepers had reported of rampant extortion, donation and harassment in the markets.

In this connection, it decided to shutter down all the shops within Mon town against the disturbances in the market.

The union also requested the Mon Area Students’ Union and Mon Town Students’ Union to volunteer to ensure smooth enforcement of the bandh. It added that any shop found violating this bandh would be strictly dealt with.

Dimapur, Sep. 7 (EMN): Governor of Nagaland, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi has extended warm greetings on the occasion of Onam festival.

Mukhi said the Onam festival symbolises love, brotherhood, and communal harmony. He said it is a harvest festival celebrated by the people of Kerala, irrespective of faith or creed.

“The numerous activities including traditional games, music, and dances provide a platform for unity and reconnection with their roots. The festivities captured through the celebrations of this culturally vibrant festival by the Malayali diaspora all around the world transcend all barriers and unite all in a common brotherhood,” the message read.

He further wished all good health, happiness and prosperity, and to celebrate the festival by following COVID appropriate protocols.
