SHRI doctors succeed in kidney transplant

IMPHAL, August 21: The doctors of Shija Institute of Renal Sciences, a unit of a popular private hospital-Shija Hospitals and Research institute(SHRI) in Manipur, have successfully performed the first ever kidney transplantation surgery in the State, according to Chairman cum Managing Director Dr. Khundongbam Palin of SHRI. Thus, Manipur is the second state in NE India to have kidney transplant facility after Guwahati in Assam.
The successful operation was conducted on the eve of country’s Independence Day celebration on a 29 year old patient from Bishnupur district headquarters. The youngest of five siblings, he has been suffering from chronic renal failure and steroid induced diabetes mellitus since 2013.
The transplant was made successful by a team of doctors comprising nephrologist Dr. P Guliver, consultant urologist and renal transplant surgeon Dr. Somorendro Paonam, and Dr. Sananda Bag, Senior Consultant Urologist and Renal Transplant Surgeon, Yasoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
Dr. Palin said every year many patients go outside the state for their kidney transplant operations spending huge amount of both money and time. He said now, the same facilities are available in the state and it will help many of the patients. He also hoped that the concerned authorities will soon give their approval to encouraging medical tourism in the state.
Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent Dr. S Jugindra of SHRI expressed gratitude to the state authority for granting certificate of registration to Shija Hospitals for organ transplantation.
Reports estimated that almost 220,000 people require kidney transplantation in India. Against this, currently, approximately 7500 kidney transplantation are performed at 250 kidney transplant centers in India.
According to Dr. Guliver Potsangbam and Dr Somorendro Paonam, the recently operated patient is now fully recovered and fit to be discharged from the hospital.
