SHILLONG, April 28

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]hillongites cheered and wished one another yesterday after Pope Francis proclaimed his predecessor Pope John Paul II as a saint.
The people of Shillong were rejoicing on Sunday as the advice of Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Pine City way back in 1986 remains intact in their hearts.
On February 4, 1986, late Pope John Paul II while addressing the mammoth crowd of over two lakh people during the Eucharistic celebration at Golf Course in Shillong, stressed the message of love and appreciation in a convincingly powerful speech.“I was in college and skipped all my daily chores to catch the glimpse of the Papal on that wintry morning in Shillong,” said one Abraham Tetseo from Nagaland recalling his college days in Shillong in the 1980s. “How powerful the Pope’s appeal was. Soft spoken, smooth and convincingly enthralled and enlightened the mammoth crowd that cold day,” added Tetseo.
According to Tetseo, large number of people from Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and even from Siliguri (West Bengal) conglomerated in Shillong on the day to listen to the Papal. “It could be over a lakh of people,” assumed Tetseo.
Alex Khongsai, another college student from Manipur studying in Shillong when Pope John Paul II visited the Pine City said, “I was totally mesmerised by the Papal’s speech on the day.”
The Pope was in Shillong just for a couple of hours.
Meanwhile, catholics across the North East are elated after the proclamation of Pope Francis canonising Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII as saints.
