Dimapur, Nov. 1 (EMN): A team from Wildlife Division, Dimapur, led by the wildlife warden H Tokaho Kinimi visited Hakhizhe village at Niuland sub-division in Dimapur, on October 30 and witnessed a sea of Amur falcon at a roosting site, about 5 km away from the village.

An update from the Wildlife Division, Dimapur, stated that a brief meeting was held with the chairman of Hakhizhe Village Council and the village-level Amur falcon protection team.

During the meeting, Viyito Shohe, chairman of Hakhizhe Village Council, informed that Amur falcon numbering around 50-100 reached the roosting site on October 14. He added that the number increased to around 1000-2000 on October 17 and by October 26 there was a sea of Amur falcon at the roosting site.

He informed the visiting team that there was a huge surge in numbers of Amur falcon visiting Hakhizhe village this year as compared to previous years. He assured the department of safe passage and stay of Amur falcon adding that the Hakhizhe village Amur falcon protection team has been patrolling, guarding and protecting the roosting sites since October 14 sometimes patrolling late even into the night as late as 11 pm.

Meanwhile, the wildlife warden has appreciated the village council and Hakhizhe village Amur falcon protection team for their sincere efforts in protecting the visiting raptors to ensure their safe stay and passage. He also assured all possible help from the department and appealed to the village council to accord equal importance to protection of other indigenous species of birds and animal.
