Sameti organises training on piggery rearing

Dimapur, March 28 (EMN): State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (Sameti), Medziphema organised a training programme on piggery rearing and management from March 21 to the 26th March to impart employable skills to unemployed rural youths.

It was held in association with the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (Manage), Hyderabad.

Deputy Project Director, Sameti and Coordinator, STRY Nagaland Tiajungla Longchar gave an overview of the objectives and expectations of the programme.

Meanwhile, director Sameti and Principal IETC, Dr. Watimongla Jamir in her keynote address stated that piggery is one of the most commercially viable livestock in the state. She opined that due to lack of proper technical knowledge, there is a large gap in the cost benefit ratio resulting in poor profit margins. She encouraged the participants to take the training programme seriously  to mitigate these issues, an update informed.

Dr. Yhuntilo Kent, In charge Boar Station, PBC VFATI, Medziphema and Dr. Sentinungla Ao, Deputy Director DMC.

The training programme covered technical sessions on introduction to piggery rearing with respect to Nagaland, common names and normal parameters of health in pig,  breed of pigs suitable for Nagaland, diseases in pig and their control measures, vaccination schedule in pig, pig farm biosecurity, low cost housing, feed management, economic sustenance through pig farming and economics of pig rearing.

The participants visited a piggery farm at Veterinary Field Assistant Training Institute, Medziphema. Practical sessions covered demonstrations on restraining of pigs, handling of piglets, teeth cutting of piglets, de-worming and types of pig feed.

A total of 15 participants were trained during the programme.
