Republic Day: Manipur on high alert

Security measures have been taken up in Manipur in view of the Republic Day boycott called by various insurgent outfits. Patrolling was being carried out in different places of the valley districts particularly in valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Bishenpur. As part of the security measures taken up all zonal officers have been asked to intensify patrolling in their respective areas of responsibility before and after the march past on Republic Day and the public have been urged to walk outside the barricade along the footpath in an orderly manner.
Besides deploying armed and unarmed security personnel mostly state police team at the strategic locations in and around Imphal particularly the Kangla fort and 1st battalion Manipur Rifles parade ground where the main functions of the Republic day celebration are scheduled to be held.
Most of the installation works of the Republic day celebration gates in Imphal were also seen under security cover.Traffic control police personnel are also scheduled to be deployed along the parade route from Khoyathong junction to Nityaipat Chuthek.Many traffic diversion points and necessary parking slots have also been organized at various locations in Imphal.
Insurgent groups operating in North East- United National Liberation Front of Western South East Asia (UNLFW), Co-ordination Committee (CoCom), Manipur, Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), have announced a boycott of Republic Day celebration by calling “total shutdown” in the region from 00:01 hrs to 18:00 hrs of 26 January 2016.
