Ronaldo hits 40th hat-trick for Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo has reached yet another landmark by scoring the 40th hat-trick of his illustrious Real Madrid career as they claimed the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday.
The Portuguese goal machine spared the European champions embarrassment against Japanese side Kashima Antlers, who took a 2-1 lead before Ronaldo fired in three goals to claim a 4-2 win after extra time.
Ronaldo has now scored three hat-tricks this season and six in the calendar year, with the J-League challengers the latest team to be put to the sword.
Lifting the Club World Cup for the second time in three years caps an outstanding year for Ronaldo, who helped Real to another Champions League win and then led Portugal to glory in the European Championship.
And 2017 promises to be just as glittering, with Real’s incredible unbeaten run now standing at 37 matches in all competitions, leaving them four points clear at the top of the La Liga table.
The bulk of Ronaldo’s hat-tricks for the Bernabeu side have come in La Liga, but there have also been five in the Champions League, against Ajax, Galatasaray, Shakhtar Donetsk, Malmo and Wolfsburg.
On Sunday, Real opened the scoring at the Yokohama International stadium inside 10 minutes when Karim Benzema fired home.
Kashima, the firm underdogs, soon responded with Gaku Shibasaki levelling the scores before then scoring again seven minutes into the second-half.
Ronaldo, who this week claimed another Ballon d’Or Award, wrecked their dreams, however, by converting a penalty to send the game into extra time.
He then scored twice more in the added period to secure a 4-2 win and ensure Real finish the year as the world’s best team once again.
