Dimapur, June 2 (EMN): The Nagaland unit of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has requested universities and autonomous colleges in the state to ‘end the uncertainty around exams’ and promote students without conducting exams for this academic year.

Copies of the letters addressed to the respective authorities of Nagaland University; St. Joseph University; ICFAI University; Patkai Christian College; St. Joseph’s College; and Kohima Science College, were made available to the local newspapers on Tuesday.

The union reasoned that the nationwide lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the academic calendar, which has caused “a great deal of trepidation” among the students.

“The NSUI has already stated that online exams are likely to be discriminatory to the underprivileged students given the highly uneven access to infrastructure and connectivity. It is also inadvisable to conduct exams without completion of course work in a physical class,” read the letter.

In view of this, the union suggested that all students in first and second year should be promoted without appearing for exams.

“Extra classes for course work missed should be conducted after universities/colleges re-open. Students in final year should be promoted based on past performance with 10% extra marks since it is observed that students improve their performance in the final year,” it further stated.

The union also suggested that universities can seek additional financial relief from PM Cares fund to which teachers and university staff have contributed.
