POs expanding services in tune with the times – PMG Kamei
Postmaster General (PMG), NE-II Dimapur, Som Kamei, has underscored the importance of post office in everyday life
DIMAPUR — Postmaster General (PMG), NE-II Dimapur, Som Kamei, has underscored the importance of post office in everyday life, especially in the present day where post offices are expanding their services to include online parcel deliveries, banking and various other schemes.
Kamei noted that though private courier services exist, their reach is often limited to specific areas, while the post office has the capability to extend its services to all corners of the state, making it a crucial and accessible option.
The PMG was addressing the felicitation programme for the exceptional contribution of its staff members, organised by the Department of Posts NE-II Region, in commemoration of ‘World Post Day’ at Dimapur Post office on Monday.
Kamei also pointed out that online e-commerce platforms are increasingly relying on postal services to reach every nook and corner of the state.
He also announced that a new parcel hub is in the works in Dimapur and this hub will serve as a comprehensive facility, responsible not only for receiving and processing parcels but also for dispatching them to destinations outside of Nagaland.
This strategic move is expected to significantly reduce processing time for parcels since the parcel hub will be manned by their own people here in Dimapur, unlike previous the practice where parcel processing was conducted in Assam, he added.
On the occasion, four officials from the Nagaland Division received commendations for their exceptional performance and unwavering commitment to their duties.
The Postmaster General of NE-II Dimapur, in recognition of outstanding service during the 2020 Covid crisis, felicitated postal assistant, Kekhriezetuo Solo from the Kohima Head Office (HO), who voluntarily offered support by relocating to Dimapur to assist in the efficient clearance of accumulated mails.
Postman YK Magar from Dimapur Bazar SO was honoured for his exceptional performance, having successfully delivered 1992 parcels and articles during the current financial year, achieving an impressive delivery rate of 95.6%. Meanwhile, postman Simon Zeliang of Chümuokedima SO received recognition for his remarkable delivery of 1641 articles in the same financial year, boasting a perfect delivery percentage of 100%.
The branch postmaster of Pungro BO operating under Kiphire SO, M Khentsumew, received an award in appreciation for his significant contributions during the current fiscal year. He was recognised for successfully facilitating the opening of 1227 IPPB accounts and 19 Postal/Rural Postal Life Insurance POSB accounts.
Kamei also shared that as part of World Post Day and National Postal Week 2023, the NE-II Circle Department of Post has planned a series of events. These include Vittiya Sashaktikaran Diwas, scheduled for October 10 in Mokokchung, Philately Day in Pfutsero on October 11, Mails and Parcels Day in Kohima on October 12, and Antyodaya Diwas in Dimapur on October 13.
The Department of Posts observes National Postal Week annually, spanning from October 10 to the 13th, and this week-long celebration commences with World Post Day, commemorating the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
